William T. Cashdollar Distinquished Visiting Professorship Lecture
The University of Tennessee Health Science College of Nursing presents a continuing education conference: William T. Cashdollar Distinguished Visiting Professorship Lecture TITLE:  “The Burden of Technology on the Naturalness of Dying” DATE: November 6, 2009 TIME:  9:00am – 12:00pm (registration begins at 8:00am)Program to begin at 9:00am LOCATION: Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare, Wilson Hall, 251 S. Claybrook, Memphis, TN  38104 PRESENTED BY:  Veronica Engle, PhD, RN, FAAN and Jane Owen, MSN, RN BC, APN, FNP Dr. Engle is a Professor of Nursing and of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and of the Gerontological Society of America.  She graduated from Wayne State University with a PhD in nursing research and gerontology, and from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a BS in nursing, a MS in nursing and gerontology, and a geriatric nurse practitioner certificate.  She is a board certified Geriatric Nurse Practitioner, a board certified Advanced Holistic Nurse, a certified Tai Chi for Arthritis instructor, and a Reiki Master Teacher-Practitioner.  For over 25 years, her research has focused on the health status, quality of life, end-of-life care, pain, and comfort needs of Black and White nursing home residents.  She has published extensively in nursing and interdisciplinary gerontological journals, and is on the Editorial Board of The Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. Ms. Owen is an Advance Practice Nurse in Palliative Services with Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare in Memphis.  She has over 30 years of experience in critical care, oncology, occupational health, and family practice.  She is also a passionate speaker who is in great demand.  Ms. Owen works tirelessly at both the state and local levels to educate the institutional community and the community at large on end-of-life issues and palliative care.  She was one of the nurses who lobbied the Tennessee State Legislature for user-friendly changes in advance directives, enacted as the 2004 Tennessee Health Care Decisions Act.  She also served on the committee to draft that legislation.  COST: No cost to view.
